Ian Delaney

Recruiter, AJW Attorney Search

Ian works closely with the Chicago legal market placing Associates and Partners at leading international firms as well as prestigious boutiques. By taking time to learn each individual's goals and passions, he is able to find opportunities which align and ensure a long-term fit for his candidates' practices.

What helps a candidate stand out?

The ability to showcase their specific value to their current and future firm.

What’s your biggest resume tip?

The first person looking at resumes often has no legal background, so making sure you use keywords is essential.

What’s your biggest interview tip?

Be confident in your skill set and know the value you can bring.

What are some dos & don’t of negotiating?

Know when you have leverage, and when you don't.

How do you feel about cover letters?

I always write a cover letter for my candidates. It's great if they have one as a starting point, but for me it's not essential.

What’s the best piece of advice you can give to someone in their job search?

The market may not always align with the bullseye of your target, sometimes you may need to make concessions in one aspect or another.

Any other tips or suggestions you’d like to share?

Communication is essential. I believe the candidate and I are teammates. If one party is hiding or withholding information, it is immediately detrimental to the search and both our reputations.
