Packaging Your Genius: How to Close the Visibility Gap

We’ve all been there: You’re working late, hitting every KPI, and solving problems before they even reach your manager’s desk. You’re doing the work of a leader, but you’re still waiting for the title (and the paycheck) to match.

In my years working in Talent Development, I’ve sat in the rooms where promotion and hiring decisions are made. Here is a truth that is hard to hear but vital to understand: High performance is the baseline, but strategic visibility is the bridge.

When a career stalls, it’s rarely because of a lack of talent. It’s because of a "Visibility Gap" AKA: the space between the incredible work you are doing and how that work is perceived by decision-makers.

If you feel like the best-kept secret in your organization, it’s time to stop just "doing" and start packaging your genius.

The Difference Between "Tasks" and "Packaging"

Decision-makers don't have time to connect the dots for you. If you present them with a list of daily tasks, they see a "doer." If you present them with packaged outcomes, they see a "leader."

The Old Way (Task-based): "I spent the month managing the new client onboarding process."

The Well-Positioned Way (Packaged Genius): "I audited and redesigned our onboarding workflow, which reduced client ramp-up time by 20% and saved the team 5 hours of manual data entry each week."

See the difference? The second version doesn't just say what you did; it tells the story of your impact.

3 Steps to Package Your Genius This Month

1. Audit Your "Digital Paper Trail"

Your reputation lives where you aren't. This means your LinkedIn profile, your internal company bio, etc. need to reflect your impact, not just your responsibilities. Pick one platform this week and swap "Responsible for..." with an outcome that started with a verb like Optimized, Spearheaded, or Transformed.

2. Leverage the "Strategic Status Update"

Don't wait for your annual review to share your wins. Use your 1:1s or project wrap-ups to highlight a specific problem you solved and the value it created for the business. As a coach, I call this "narrative ownership." You are teaching people how to value your expertise.

3. Seek "High-Value" Visibility

Not all eyes are created equal. Identify one project or committee that puts you in front of leaders outside your immediate circle. Packaging your genius is about making sure the right people see the right outcomes.

Stop Being Invisible. Start Being Valued.

Closing the Visibility Gap is one of the fastest ways to move from feeling "lost" to feeling empowered in your career. But I know that "bragging" about yourself can feel icky, especially if you've been taught to just "put your head down and work hard."

As your coach, I’m here to help you find your voice.

I specialize in helping mid-career professionals simplify the process of refining their narrative. We’ll work together to identify your unique outcomes and package them in a way that feels authentic, professional, and undeniable.
