5 Valuable Ways to Spend Time in the Job Search

The key is in not spending time, but in investing it

The job search can be overwhelming. There are so many things fighting for your time. These 5 tips will help you make the most of your efforts:

  1. Prioritize Self-care: That’s right! The first way is actually much more big picture than search specific. Get some more sleep. Do yoga. Meditate. Throw on a facemask while you watch your favorite show. If you are centered and well rested, you’ll be more focused and polished when you reach out to your contacts, write your resume, and interview.

  2. Set Up Google Alerts: Set up a Google Alerts to have that information regularly come to you. Forbes has 6 suggestions for alerts to create. You can also set up alerts for keywords around the specific positions you’re interested in.

  3. Pay Attention to Job Descriptions: Look at what skills & experiences the descriptions emphasize as well as how are they word the description. Then use that language in your resume, cover letter, and communication.  For example, Marketing Coordinators may “implement social media campaigns” or “analyze data” or both! Make sure your communication speaks to which area(s) the company is looking for.

  4. Brush Up on Relevant Tech: What technology is used in your field? Do you know how to do a vlookup? How about a pivot table? Photoshop? Acuity? Python? With tech continuing to play a growing role in the workplace, keeping your skills sharp will prepare you for your next opportunity.

  5. Practice Your Elevator Pitch: This is the 30 second answer to “tell me about yourself.” Your elevator pitch sets the tone for the rest of what you say. Be specific and focus on things that are relevant for the job

The elevator pitch can be a tricky one, so here are some phrases to help you get started:

  • Tell who are you and what do you do

    • I’ve been working as <your current/previous role>

  • Why should they care: Be specific & unique

    • For the last <#> months/years I’ve been working on…. With a team that…

    • One of the most interesting things about that is...

  • What do you want: What are you looking for in your next position

    • Looking for a company that…

    • I want to come in and make an impact <doing…>
