The Career Compass: 5 Questions to Ask When You’ve Lost Your North Star
We’ve all been there. You wake up, look at your calendar, and realize that while you are technically "successful," you feel completely adrift. You’re hitting your targets and checking the boxes, but the internal compass that used to point toward excitement and growth has gone quiet.
When you lose your North Star, the temptation is to make a radical change—quit the job, pivot the industry, or start over. But often, you don't need a new career; you need a Strategic Realignment.
To remain well-positioned for the long haul, you have to periodically recalibrate. If you’re feeling "stuck in the weeds," use these 5 compass questions to find your way back to your mission.
1. Does my current workload reflect my Genius Zone?
Go back to your Energy vs. Effort Matrix. If your days are currently 80% "Necessary Grind" and 0% "Genius Zone," it’s no wonder you feel lost. Your North Star is almost always located where your highest impact meets your highest energy.
The Question: Am I actually doing the work I was hired to do, or have I drifted into becoming a "catch-all" for everyone else's low-impact tasks?
2. Whose career path am I actually following?
In a corporate environment, it is incredibly easy to adopt someone else's definition of success. You might be chasing a promotion or a title simply because it’s the "next logical step," even if it takes you further away from the work you actually love.
The Question: If I achieved the "next level" on my current path tomorrow, would I actually be excited about the daily reality of that role?
3. Where is the "Friction" coming from?
Friction isn't always a sign that you're in the wrong place; sometimes it's just a sign that you've outgrown your current box. When your skills exceed your responsibilities, the resulting boredom can feel exactly like burnout.
The Question: Is this "stuck" feeling caused by an overextended workload, or a lack of new, high-level challenges to solve?
4. What was the last project that made time disappear?
Your internal compass leaves clues in your past. Think back to a moment in the last six months when you felt completely "in flow." Usually, that project involved a specific skill (like strategic problem solving, cross-functional leadership, or complex translation, etc.) that is core to your professional identity.
The Question: What was the specific action I was taking in that moment, and how can I integrate more of that into my current week?
5. If I were starting at this company today, would I apply for my own job?
This is the ultimate clarity check. It helps you separate your loyalty to the people and the "time served" from the actual mission of the role.
The Question: Does the value I am providing today align with the legacy I want to build for tomorrow?
